The Icon A5 – ‘Spin resistance’

The Icon A5 is still in development, but you may have seen it play the starring role in Microsoft’s latest flight ‘simulator’ (game), ‘Flight’.

The designers recently created this video, to show how safe the aircraft is – a pilot can try very hard to spin it and yet it will not spin. In the video they demonstrate this by flying a Cessna 150 alongside the Icon A5, and both pilots stall then try and spin the aircraft.

For those of you who think this looks scary, it’s actually quite hard to make a Cessna 150 spin even intentionally, and it is also very easy to recover – it’s also a lot of fun. It’s an interesting demonstration, I would be interested to know how easy the Icon A5 would be to recover from a spin, if you found yourself in one.
