The World’s Biggest Aircraft – The Antonov An-225 Mriya

With a 290ft wingspan, and a length of 275ft, 7 inches – the Antonov An-225 Mriya (meaning ‘Dream’) is the largest aircraft currently flying*.

The aircraft’s primary goal is to transport the very large and heavy. It was deisnged with space rockets in mind, and once used to transport Russia’s Buran shuttle and ‘Energia’ rocket boosters, It is currently used to move items such as 150-ton generators, and railway locomotives. It also plays a huge role in international relief efforts, as it can be used to move huge quantities of aid.

*The largest plane ever to fly is the Hughes H-4 Spruce Goose – which only flew 1,600m at an altitude of 70ft.
